What a rosary case is for

The lids

A one-decade pocket rosary fits comfortably inside, which is the most common combination. A full 6 mm bead rosary fits neatly; with 8 mm beads, the fit is tight, so it is advisable to test it with a sample before placing a large order. It is also used to store a loose medal or a rosary ring.
Case or pouch
The usual alternative to the metal case is the fabric pouch, which is cheaper and lighter. It works for transport, but offers no protection: a chain rosary inside a pouch will still tangle and bump against whatever else is in the backpack. Metal costs a bit more and weighs a bit more, but in return the rosary arrives intact. For a First Holy Communion distribution, where the piece needs to last for years in a drawer, the difference is noticeable.
