Each year, millions of people —many of them sick— make a pilgrimage to a small town in the French Pyrenees to drink from a spring, light a candle, and place their pain in the hands of a Mother. The prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes is that of the one who seeks comfort and health, of the one who approaches with their fragility and discovers they are not alone. It all started with a poor, illiterate girl and a phrase that changed the history of Marian devotion. What happened in Lourdes and why does it continue to attract so many people?
Historical context: the apparitions to Saint Bernadette
In 1858, in a grotto on the outskirts of Lourdes, the Virgin Mary appeared eighteen times to Bernadette Soubirous, a fourteen-year-old girl, sickly and from a very poor family. The «Lady» asked her for prayer and penance for sinners, told her to dig in the ground —from which the spring that still flows today burst forth— and asked that a chapel be built there.
The decisive phrase came in one of the final apparitions. When Bernadette asked her name, the Lady replied: «Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou» («I am the Immaculate Conception»). That left everyone astonished: just four years earlier, in 1854, Pope Pius IX had solemnly proclaimed that dogma, and an unschooled girl could not possibly know such a theological expression. Heaven thus confirmed what the Church had just defined.
Since then, Lourdes has become the greatest sanctuary for the sick in the world. The Church celebrates Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11, a date that Saint John Paul II wished to link to the World Day of the Sick. A note is in order: the healings of Lourdes, rigorously studied by a medical office, are real but exceptional; what is given there to almost everyone is not the healing of the body, but that of the soul: peace, comfort, and renewed faith.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes

Oh María, Inmaculada Concepción, Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, que en Lourdes quisiste mostrarte como manantial de gracia y consuelo: vuelve hacia mí tus ojos misericordiosos. Como hiciste con Bernadette, acoge mi humildad y mi pobreza. Alcánzame del Señor la salud del cuerpo, si conviene a mi alma, y sobre todo la salud del corazón: la fe, la paz y la confianza. Reflection and meaning: a Mother for the fragile
That the Virgin chose Bernadette —poor, sick, uneducated— is no minor detail: it is God’s style, who «lifts up the humble». Lourdes is proof that God looks first upon those whom the world discards.
«Health of the body, if it is expedient for my soul»
Catholic prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes never demands healing as a right. It asks for health «if it is expedient»; that is, it trusts that God knows better than we do what we need. This frees the devotion from superstition: we do not go to Lourdes to «buy» a miracle, but to trust. And often the greatest miracle is interior: someone who arrives in despair and returns in peace, even though their illness persists.
Water and the candle: signs, not magic
The spring water and the lit candles are beautiful signs, but they should be understood correctly. The water recalls Baptism and purification; it is not a magic potion. The candle represents the faith that burns and the prayer that continues when the pilgrim has already left. As in all healthy devotion, the sign points to a spiritual reality; it does not replace it.
The value of offered suffering
Lourdes has taught generations of the sick something difficult but liberating: that suffering, united to Christ, is not sterile. It is not about seeking pain or simply resigning oneself, but about not living it alone. Alongside the Virgin, the sick person discovers that their cross has companionship and meaning. This is why many return from Lourdes not cured, but transformed.
A prayer for today
Many pray it for a sick loved one, ahead of an operation or a difficult diagnosis; others say it on February 11 or while drinking Lourdes water brought back from a pilgrimage. There is no need to travel to France: it is enough to approach with the simplicity of Bernadette and place one's fragility in the hands of the Mother. To the fragile, Lourdes reminds them that they are precisely God's preferred ones.
«Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou»
The fact that makes Lourdes exceptional is chronological. Pius IX defines the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. Four years later, in 1858, the apparition presents herself to Bernadette Soubirous saying in Gascon «Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou» — «I am the Immaculate Conception».
Bernadette was fourteen years old, was illiterate, and did not understand the phrase: she repeated it on her way home so as not to forget it before telling the parish priest. That detail is what convinced the local clergy, because no one expected an untrained girl to handle a theological expression recently defined in Rome.
Of the thousands of healings declared in Lourdes, the Church has officially recognized only about seventy as miraculous, after medical examination. That prudence is part of the record, not a minor detail.
