After teaching, he entered the hermit community of Fonte Avellana. There he was elected prior and worked to organise a life dedicated to prayer, study and charity among the brothers.

Retreat coexisted with many responsibilities outside the monastery. As Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, he received mediation missions and took part in the Church reform of the eleventh century. His writings reflect both an interest in the life of hermits and attention to the problems of his time. This combination can give meaning to a gift for someone who studies or shares his spirituality.

Image, places and commemoration

The Saint Peter Damian mug shows the saint seated before a book and looking towards an angel.
