His activity is placed in the early Christian centuries, although no secure chronology of his life exists. Peter Chrysologus presented him as a pastor and martyr who continued serving his community after suffering persecution. Later acts developed other accounts of his origins and mission. This distinction allows his memory to be shared without turning every transmitted episode into a precise biographical date.

His name and the celebration on 20 July

The Saint Apollinaris of Ravenna mug includes his name and commemoration on 20 July on the reverse, following the date used by this design.
